CHAPTER ELEVEN
My eyes went wide, and my hands twitched on Hadesâ chest. That was all I could manage in the second it took for the blade to reach me. But not Hades. His hand whipped up faster than I could see, and he caught the blade a centimeter from my chest.
Just over my heart.
In a blink, I went from straddling him to standing behind him, staring at his red back and black wings.
âWho dares?â he roared.
His torso heaved with each furious breath as his head swiveled to survey the clearing. After resting my forehead on his back for a second, I risked peeking around him. However, the space by the trees where someone had been was now vacant.
Hades fisted his hands, and the ground started to tremble as badly as my insides.
âPlease donât,â I said, wrapping my arms around his waist. âDonât make the world shake.â
He snarled and gently pried free of my hold. Facing me, he tipped my chin up with a claw-tipped finger.
âI will damn the entire world for the being who dares attempt to harm what is mine.â
âYouâre not that cruel. Itâs not the entire worldâs fault. Just one manâs.â
âNot cruel? I allowed you to torture my eldest son as I watched. For you, there is no depth to my cruelty.â
I believed every word he said, and it equally terrified and mesmerized me.
âIâm asking you not to be unnecessarily cruel. Please.â
His devil form slowly retreated as he cupped my cheek and lightly kissed my lips.
âSo be it,â he said softly. âCome. We need answers.â
The clearing shimmered around us then disappeared as he portaled us from the gardens to the throne room. I stumbled a little, but he steadied me and led me to his chair. I settled onto his lap without a word of complaint and stole some comfort by resting my head on his shoulder.
âTwo attempts to kill me in one day is definitely making me feel unwelcomed,â I said.
A mark Iâd given him drew my attention, and how Iâd felt while doing it flared to life.
âYou have never been more wanted,â Hades said, running his hands over my back and arms.
I felt his desire for me the same as Iâd felt it in the clearing. And like before, he didnât try to take what he wanted. He waited for whatever I would willingly give. That made me want to give more.
I tipped my head, bringing my mouth close to his collarbone.
âI could tell,â I whispered before nipping his skin.
His breath left him in a whoosh.
I was very aware of the risk I was taking. Sex with Hades wasnât an option. Kissing him like he wanted would probably be my downfall. But I wasnât willing to give up all contact. For the first time in my life, something felt good and right, and I wanted to just enjoy it with little fear or guilt.
âYou torment me,â he groaned. âI desire this more than the next beat of my heart. Yet, I cannot delay finding the one who would take you from me.
